Abhishek Sharma has reached Colombo with his family ahead of India’s high-stakes T20 World Cup 2026 clash against Pakistan. The left-handed opener missed India’s recent T20I game against Namibia due to a stomach infection, and his fitness will be evaluated during the team’s net session before a final call on his inclusion.
Sharma’s arrival with his parents, Rajkumar and Anita Sharma, highlights the strong support system behind the batter. His father, also his childhood coach, has played a key role in shaping his career and was present during India’s Asia Cup campaign in Dubai.
The BCCI confirmed Sharma had been unwell earlier this week, leaving team gatherings due to his illness. Team camaraderie remains high, with players like Arshdeep Singh checking in on him, reflecting the supportive environment within the squad.
If Sharma is unavailable, India could retain Sanju Samson at the top or pair Ishan Kishan with Washington Sundar. Nevertheless, Sharma’s experience against Pakistan would significantly boost India’s confidence.
In T20Is, Sharma has amassed 1,297 runs in 38 matches at an average of 37.05 and a strike rate of 194.74, including two centuries and eight fifties. Against Pakistan, he has scored 110 runs in three matches at a strike rate of 189.65, showcasing his explosive batting ability.
With practice sessions underway in Colombo, the team is closely monitoring Sharma’s recovery. His potential return could be pivotal for India’s batting line-up, offering the firepower and experience needed for a high-pressure encounter against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2026.
