Aiden Markram Set to Captain Manchester Super Giants After Record Hundred Auction Deal
Aiden Markram is set to captain Manchester Super Giants in the upcoming men’s season of The Hundred after becoming the most expensive overseas signing during the latest player auction. The South African skipper was identified as a key target by head coach Justin Langer, who described Markram as the franchise’s “number one priority” ahead of the auction.

Markram’s signing strengthens the growing connection between the Super Giants franchise network across global leagues. The South African captain is already part of the ownership group’s teams in other tournaments, including Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League and Durban Super Giants in the SA20. Langer praised Markram not only for his performances on the field but also for his leadership qualities and character.

According to Langer, Markram’s leadership ability was one of the main reasons behind the decision to target him so aggressively in the auction. The Australian coach described him as an outstanding cricketer and a natural leader who can guide the team both on and off the field during the tournament.

Meanwhile, Daniel Vettori is still hopeful that Harry Brook might captain Sunrisers Leeds in the competition. Brook previously led Northern Superchargers during two seasons when Andrew Flintoff served as head coach. However, Brook recently indicated during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup that he might step away from captaincy duties in The Hundred due to his increasing international commitments.

Vettori acknowledged that Brook’s schedule with the England national cricket team is extremely demanding. The Hundred season will begin shortly after England’s ODI series against India national cricket team, and the tournament final is scheduled just days before England’s Test series against Pakistan national cricket team begins. With such a tight schedule, Brook may only join his franchise shortly before their opening match.

If Brook decides not to take on the leadership role, Sunrisers Leeds still have several experienced players capable of captaining the team. Candidates include Mitchell Marsh, Dan Lawrence and Zak Crawley, all of whom have previous captaincy experience in domestic or franchise cricket.

Several captaincy appointments in the men’s competition had already been confirmed before the auction. Phil Salt will lead Welsh Fire, while Jacob Bethell has been named captain of Birmingham Phoenix. Meanwhile, Sam Curran will captain MI London in the upcoming season.

Other teams are still finalizing their leadership decisions. Sam Billings is widely considered the favorite to captain Trent Rockets, while players such as Liam Livingstone and David Willey are strong contenders to lead London Spirit.

In the women’s competition, only a few captaincy roles have been confirmed so far. Ellyse Perry will lead Birmingham Phoenix, while Meg Lanning is expected to captain Manchester Super Giants. Other teams are still assessing their leadership options ahead of the new season.

As The Hundred prepares for another high-profile edition, the appointment of Markram as captain of Manchester Super Giants highlights the growing influence of international stars and franchise networks in shaping the competition’s future.
