Amelia Kerr Stars with Seven Wickets as New Zealand Clinch ODI Series Against Zimbabwe
New Zealand sealed the ODI series against Zimbabwe with a commanding eight-wicket victory in Dunedin, powered by a superb all-round performance from Amelia Kerr. The legspinner dismantled Zimbabwe’s batting lineup with a seven-wicket haul before guiding the chase with a fluent knock.

Kerr’s performance ensured the hosts wrapped up the three-match series with a game to spare. New Zealand needed only 45.3 overs of match time to secure victory at University Oval.

Kerr’s Devastating Spell Dismantles Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe began with promise after captain Amelia Kerr chose to field first, as Kelis Ndhlovu and Modester Mupachikwa put together a 25-run opening partnership. The momentum stalled when Ndhlovu was forced to retire hurt, leaving Zimbabwe exposed against New Zealand’s disciplined bowling attack.

Molly Penfold struck early blows during the middle phase of the innings. Her burst of wickets removed Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano, Beloved Biza and Loreen Tshuma, leaving Zimbabwe struggling at 48 for 3.

From that point, Kerr took control and turned the innings decisively in New Zealand’s favour. Her sharp legspin and variations proved too difficult for the visiting batters, who were unable to build any sustained partnerships.

Seven Wickets Highlight Kerr’s Dominance

Kerr’s first breakthrough came in the 18th over when she dismissed Chiedza Dhururu. The breakthrough triggered a rapid collapse as Zimbabwe’s middle order failed to resist the mounting pressure.

She continued to strike regularly through the lower order, finishing with remarkable figures of seven for 34. Zimbabwe were eventually bowled out for 102 inside 30 overs, with Mupachikwa’s 32 standing as the highest score of the innings.

Only a brief ninth-wicket stand between Audrey Mazvishaya and Tendai Makusha delayed the inevitable. Their 19-run partnership was the only other contribution of note during a difficult afternoon for Zimbabwe’s batting unit.

Comfortable Chase Seals the Series

Chasing a modest target of 103, New Zealand approached the innings with calm assurance. Kerr opened the batting alongside Isabella Gaze and quickly ensured the hosts seized control of the run chase.

The pair added 34 runs before Gaze departed for 20 in the sixth over. By then the contest had already swung firmly in New Zealand’s favour as the required rate remained minimal.

Kerr continued to dictate the pace of the chase with confident strokeplay. She struck six boundaries and a six during her 40-ball 45, effectively removing any chance of a Zimbabwe comeback.

Her dismissal in the 13th over left only 20 runs required for victory. Maddy Green and Brooke Halliday completed the chase without difficulty, guiding New Zealand home with plenty of overs to spare.

Series Momentum Firmly with New Zealand

The result confirmed New Zealand’s dominance throughout the tour. Prior to the ODI series, the hosts had already completed a 3–0 sweep in the T20I leg against Zimbabwe.

With the series now secured, New Zealand will head into the final ODI looking to complete another clean sweep. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, will hope to produce a stronger performance and end the tour on a competitive note.

For now, the match will be remembered for Kerr’s outstanding all-round display. Her seven-wicket haul combined with a composed run chase underlined why she remains one of the most influential players in international women’s cricket.
