Arshdeep Singh's Poor Form a Big Worry for PBKS

Arshdeep Singh Under the Microscope After Another Costly Outing

Arshdeep Singh has been one of the most talked-about bowlers in IPL 2026, but not for the right reasons. The left-arm pacer, who is India's leading wicket-taker in T20 internationals, has been well below his best this season for Punjab Kings. After eight matches, he has claimed just eight wickets at an average of 41.12 and an economy rate of 10.96, figures that sit well below what is expected from a premium fast bowler.

The Costly Evening Against Rajasthan Royals

The problems came to a head in PBKS's first defeat of the season against Rajasthan Royals on April 28 at Mullanpur. Arshdeep conceded 68 runs in four overs and took only one wicket as RR chased down a 222-run target with four balls to spare. Two of those overs came in the powerplay where he went for 15 and 22, and the damage in the middle and death overs was just as severe. For a bowler who is supposed to lead the attack in these very phases, the numbers were impossible to ignore.

Former India spinner Piyush Chawla did not hold back when analysing the performance. He acknowledged that Arshdeep bowls in the hardest phases but insisted that excuses cannot be offered forever for a player of his standing. His best outing this season came against Mumbai Indians when he took three wickets for 22 runs, but that kind of performance has been an exception rather than the pattern.

What the Wider Numbers Reveal

Beyond the individual match figures, the broader statistics paint a concerning picture for PBKS as a team. They have now conceded scores of 200 or more in five of their seven completed innings and have the joint-highest runs conceded per over in the competition. Their bowling average of over 41 runs per wicket is among the worst in the tournament. The fact that their batting has been spectacular enough to mask these bowling numbers in most games is a dangerous situation to be in heading toward the playoffs, where teams are more clinical.

PBKS fast bowling coach James Hopes tried to keep the mood measured after the defeat, calling it a reality check rather than a crisis and noting that the squad has a few days to regroup before facing Gujarat Titans on May 3. However, Hopes himself admitted that some things need to be tidied up, and chief among those is Arshdeep finding his rhythm with the new ball.

Yuzvendra Chahal Offered a Bright Spot

Among the bowling concerns, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal at least offered something positive against RR, taking three wickets for 36 runs in his four overs. His performance was a reminder that PBKS do have quality in their attack when individuals are clicking. But Arshdeep's inability to pick up early wickets remains the biggest concern because his success depends heavily on getting breakthroughs in the powerplay. When that does not happen, his economy spirals and the rest of the innings becomes difficult to control.

The Path Forward for PBKS

Despite the loss, Punjab Kings are still top of the IPL 2026 table with 13 points from eight games. They remain strong favourites to make the playoffs and have the batting depth to post and chase large totals. But if Arshdeep continues in this form into the knockout rounds, opponents will target him relentlessly and the pressure on the rest of the attack will become unmanageable. The upcoming game against Gujarat Titans gives Arshdeep a chance to rediscover his best. PBKS will be hoping their lead bowler responds with the kind of inspired spell that has defined his career at the highest level.
