Bangladesh Sports Minister to Consult ICC Over BCB’s Future Amid Ongoing Probe
18 Mar 2026, 9:58 am

The future of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) remains uncertain as sports minister Aminul Haque confirmed he will consult the International Cricket Council (ICC) before making any final decisions regarding the board. This comes amid an ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities during last year’s BCB elections.
CC Consultation Before Final Decision
Speaking on Tuesday, Haque stated that he would wait for the findings of the five-member investigation committee formed on March 11. Once the report is submitted within 15 working days, he plans to review it and then engage with the ICC to determine the next course of action.
The move signals caution from the government, given the ICC’s strict stance on political interference in cricket administration. Any misstep could have serious consequences, including potential suspension from international cricket.
Election Controversy Under Investigation
The committee is examining allegations of “irregularities, manipulation, and abuse of power” during the elections that saw Aminul Islam re-elected as BCB president.
The controversy gained momentum after former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal accused Aminul Islam of influencing the election process. These claims included requesting changes to councillors in certain districts and extending nomination deadlines multiple times.
Tamim withdrew his candidacy before the elections, while Aminul denied all allegations. However, concerns from Dhaka-based clubs and cricket officials have continued to fuel the debate.
Scope of the Investigation
According to Haque, the investigation committee will interview key stakeholders, including election commissioners, current BCB officials, board directors, and district administrators. A key focus will be on claims that district administrators changed their nominations after receiving instructions, raising questions about the integrity of the election process.
The findings of this investigation are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the government’s next steps regarding the BCB.
T20 World Cup Absence Also Under Review
In addition to the election probe, the sports ministry is planning a second investigation into Bangladesh’s absence from this year’s ICC Men's T20 World Cup, which was held in India and Sri Lanka.
Bangladesh opted not to participate due to security concerns after prolonged discussions, leading the ICC to replace them with Scotland national cricket team.
Haque emphasized the need to understand what went wrong, particularly in terms of sports diplomacy, and ensure such a situation does not arise again. The second committee is expected to be formed after Eid.
Balancing Governance and Independence
The situation highlights the delicate balance between government oversight and the independence required by international cricket bodies. While the government seeks transparency and accountability, the BCB has already raised concerns about possible interference.
With ICC involvement now likely, the coming weeks will be crucial for Bangladesh cricket. The decisions taken could have long-term implications for the country’s standing in global cricket and its administrative stability.
