Bhuvneshwar vs Kamboj: The Purple Cap Battle Nobody Saw Coming
8 May 2026, 4:15 pm

Two Bowlers, One Target
The IPL 2026 Purple Cap race has produced a surprising front-runner battle. Bhuvneshwar Kumar of Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Anshul Kamboj of Chennai Super Kings both sit on 17 wickets after nine matches, separated only by their economy rates. The two seamers have taken very different paths to get here, but the result is a genuinely absorbing contest at the top of the bowling charts.
Bhuvneshwar's Return to the Top
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is 35 years old and was not expected to be leading the Purple Cap standings at this stage of his career. Yet here he is, swinging the ball both ways, bowling intelligent spells, and proving that craft and experience can still win in a format that seems designed to punish patience. His economy rate across the nine games has been competitive, and his ability to take wickets in the powerplay as well as the death has made him one of the most reliable bowlers in the competition.
Kamboj Makes His Case Loudly
Anshul Kamboj came into the season with much less expectation on his shoulders, which may have freed him up to express himself. The CSK seamer has been relentless, using his height and bounce to create problems for opposition batters. He has been equally effective with the new ball and when brought back in the middle overs, giving Ruturaj Gaikwad a dependable option at various stages of every match.
The Chase Is Still Wide Open
Kagiso Rabada of Gujarat Titans sits just one behind on 16 wickets, while Jofra Archer and SRH's Eshan Malinga are level on 15. With several rounds of matches still to play, all five are within realistic striking range. The bowling contest at the top of the table could be decided on the very last day of the league stage.
