Blackwell Urges Shock Recall for Carey in Australia

Blackwell Urges Shock Recall for Carey in Australia
Alex Blackwell has urged Australia’s selectors to consider a shock recall for Nicola Carey as the team seeks to strengthen its squad ahead of the T20 World Cup in England.

Carey, who has not played for Australia since 2023 after prioritizing a pre-season at home, has 27 T20Is and 23 ODIs to her name. Now 32, she has been one of the most consistent performers in the WBBL, playing a key role in Hobart Hurricanes’ title charge this summer.

Blackwell’s Recommendation

Blackwell emphasized Carey’s strong all-round capabilities. "If I was a selector I would ask her what her views would be and get her in the camp," said Blackwell, recently inducted into Cricket NSW's Hall of Fame.

"She had a wonderful WBBL, can bowl with the new ball, swing it, and bats left-handed. She’s won lots of titles and could make a huge difference in the World Cup final at Lord’s."

Captain Alyssa Healy Welcomes Carey Back

Australia captain Alyssa Healy supported the idea, highlighting Carey’s consistent form. "I completely understand her contract decision. She has been super consistent and a left-hander in the side wouldn’t be a bad option," Healy said. Carey’s inclusion would provide Australia with a balanced all-round option, particularly in comparison to current vice-captain Tahlia McGrath.

Strategic Implications

Australia’s recent semi-final exits in the T20 and ODI World Cups have left the team without trophies. Carey’s recall could bolster the squad with experience and skill, strengthening both the batting and bowling departments.

Other candidates for key roles include Ashleigh Gardner, Phoebe Litchfield, and Annabel Sutherland, with options for short-term captaincy still under consideration.

Looking Ahead to the T20 World Cup

Australia will play six T20s against India in preparation for the World Cup in June. Carey's potential return could influence team dynamics, provide strategic flexibility, and enhance Australia’s chances of securing the elusive World Cup title. Her proven WBBL performance, ability to swing the ball, and batting prowess make her a compelling candidate for selection.
