Breaking: Canada captain Dilpreet Bajwa Named for T20 WC 2026
Dilpreet Bajwa has been officially appointed Canada captain for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, marking a significant leadership transition for the emerging cricket nation. The 23-year-old will guide a 15-member squad as Canada prepares for only its second appearance at the global event, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The decision underlines Canada’s intent to invest in youth and attacking cricket at the highest level.

Canada captain to Make Leadership Debut

The newly appointed Canada captain brings solid international exposure despite his young age. Bajwa has already featured in nine ODIs and 17 T20Is, establishing himself as a dependable top-order batter. His international T20 record includes four half-centuries and a strike rate of 133.22, numbers that reflect both consistency and intent. The leadership role adds a new dimension to his responsibilities as Canada looks to compete against elite opposition.

Bajwa’s credentials as Canada captain are further strengthened by his performances in domestic franchise cricket. During the Super 60 T10 tournament, he produced explosive innings, including 57 off 18 balls and an unbeaten 68 off 22, showcasing his ability to accelerate under pressure. Such form will be crucial in the fast-paced environment of the T20 World Cup 2026.

Squad Strength and Batting Firepower

The Canada captain will be supported by several experienced names and proven power-hitters. Opening batter Yuvraj Samra stands out with 27 sixes in just 15 T20I innings and a strike rate exceeding 160. Former skipper Saad Bin Zafar, along with Kaleem Sana, Dilon Heyliger, Nicholas Kirton and Navneet Dhaliwal, provides balance and leadership depth within the squad.

Group Challenge for Canada captain

Placed in Group D, the Canada captain faces a stern test against South Africa, New Zealand, Afghanistan and UAE. Canada will begin their campaign against South Africa on February 9 in Ahmedabad, with all group-stage matches scheduled in India. The team qualified by winning the Americas Regional Final unbeaten, a momentum the Canada captain will aim to carry into the global tournament and build on their historic win over Ireland in the 2024 edition.
