Pakistan Boycott Ends After ICC Talks
The Pakistan boycott of the India clash at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 officially ended after intense negotiations involving the ICC, PCB, Bangladesh Cricket Board and several member nations. The Pakistan boycott had put the February 15 group match in Colombo under serious doubt, raising concerns over the tournament’s integrity and commercial impact.
PCB Chief Admits No Gains from Pakistan Boycott
Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi publicly acknowledged that the Pakistan boycott did not result in any direct concessions. Speaking to the media ahead of the official announcement, Naqvi stated that Pakistan’s stance was taken solely in support of Bangladesh, stressing that the Pakistan boycott was never meant to secure benefits for Pakistan itself.
ICC Rejects PCB Demands During Pakistan Boycott Talks
During discussions triggered by the Pakistan boycott, the ICC rejected three PCB demands, including calls for resumption of bilateral cricket with India and a proposed tri-series involving Bangladesh. The ICC reiterated that all members must honour participation agreements, effectively closing the door on leverage attempts linked to the Pakistan boycott.
Bangladesh Factor Behind Pakistan Boycott Resolution
The Pakistan boycott softened after Bangladesh requested Pakistan to play the match, following assurances from the ICC that no penalties would be imposed on the BCB. Bangladesh was also promised hosting rights for a future ICC event, which played a key role in defusing the Pakistan boycott situation.
Pakistan Boycott Ends Under Government Directive
The Pakistan government ultimately instructed the national team to take the field, citing the spirit of cricket and appeals from friendly nations like Sri Lanka and the UAE. With the Pakistan boycott withdrawn, the marquee India-Pakistan clash is set to proceed as scheduled, restoring stability to the T20 World Cup 2026.
