Cameron Green Set to Bowl in KKR vs LSG Clash as Back Injury Clears
Kolkata Knight Riders have been waiting for Cameron Green to bowl. They paid INR 25.20 crore for the privilege – the highest fee ever paid for an overseas player at an IPL auction – and for the first two competitive matches of the season, he was available only as a batter. On Thursday at Eden Gardens against Lucknow Super Giants, that wait is expected to end.
Reports indicate that Green has been cleared to bowl competitively, managing the lower-back injury that required Cricket Australia to restrict his bowling load at the start of the tournament. CA had issued a statement on March 30 confirming that Green would need approximately 10 to 12 days before he could return to bowling duties. That window has passed, and the timing – with KKR in genuine need of both their first win and a more balanced attack – could hardly be more significant.
The Burden Green Has Carried
The decision not to bowl Green in KKR's opening matches created an unusual dynamic for a franchise that bought him precisely because he is a genuine all-rounder. His batting, so far, has not delivered: 24 runs across three innings, with KKR losing their first two fixtures against Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad before a rain-affected game against Punjab Kings yielded a single point without a ball bowled.
When KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane was asked after the Mumbai game why Green had not bowled, his answer – """"ask Cricket Australia"""" – captured the frustration of a team operating with one hand tied behind its back. Green bats at three and four but has struggled to find his best touch, hampered perhaps by the knowledge that he could not contribute fully with the ball and the natural uncertainty that comes with managing a significant physical complaint.
What Green's Bowling Adds
KKR's pace resources entering IPL 2026 were already stretched. Harshit Rana had been ruled out before the tournament began with injury, subsequently replaced by Navdeep Saini. Akash Deep and Mustafizur Rahman – the latter released on BCCI instructions – have also been unavailable. Varun Chakravarthy missed the Punjab Kings game with a hand injury. In short, KKR have been bowling with limited options at a critical phase of their campaign.
Green, at his best, bowls at 135 to 140 km/h and possesses the ability to move the ball away from right-handed batters. He is an effective option in the powerplay where his natural length and bounce create difficulties, and he has historically been used to death overs where his pace and variations prove useful in T20 formats. Having him available with the ball does not merely give KKR an additional bowling option it fundamentally rebalances their eleven.
The Bigger Picture
KKR go into the LSG match in genuine jeopardy. One point from three games, no wins, and a squad still not fully fit. Lucknow, by contrast, are heading in the right direction under Rishabh Pant, with Mohammed Shami leading a pace attack that has already caused problems for opponents this season.
For Green personally, this represents a chance to justify the enormous investment KKR's management placed in him. As a lower-back injury, there will be load management considerations that do not disappear overnight. But the expectation is that Eden Gardens will finally see what the most expensive overseas signing in IPL auction history can do with ball in hand. KKR need it. And Green, you suspect, is ready.
