Crucial Analysis: Suryakumar Yadav's T20 Slump
20 Jan 2026, 9:30 pm

Suryakumar Yadav, once one of the most destructive T20 batters globally, is facing a challenging phase as his recent performances indicate a slump against pace bowling. While insisting he is "out of runs, not out of form," data from the last 15 months suggests a deeper issue in execution.
Yadav's Decline Against Pace
From November 2024, Suryakumar has struggled significantly, scoring at an average of 8.11 with a strike rate below 110 against seamers. Eighteen of his 19 dismissals during this period came against pace, most via caught aerial shots early in the innings. This contrasts sharply with his IPL 2025 form, where he managed 16 consecutive scores of 25+ and remained unbeaten in his first 10 balls, aided by a balanced mix of pace and spin.
Shot Selection and Scoring Zones
Analysis shows Yadav’s control over aerial shots has dropped from 86% to 52%, and his scoring behind square on the leg side against pace has fallen from 58.55 to 7.83. Signature shots like the flick and driving on the up have cratered, highlighting how bowlers have decoded his strategy and exploited slower deliveries and early-seam challenges.
Looking Ahead
Despite the slump, IPL evidence confirms Yadav’s instincts and range remain intact. The upcoming series against New Zealand and the T20 World Cup group stages offer him opportunities to regain form. Strategic adjustments and careful handling against pace bowling could see the return of the Suryakumar Yadav capable of dominating T20 cricket once again.
