Dasun Shanaka Apologizes After Sri Lanka’s Narrow T20 World Cup 2026 Exit
Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka offered a candid reflection following the team’s close defeat against Pakistan in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026 at Pallekele International Stadium. Despite an unbeaten 76 from Shanaka, Sri Lanka fell short by just five runs chasing 212.

He acknowledged the impact of injuries and missing key bowlers, which disrupted team balance and morale. “It’s been a tough campaign for us. We had a few injuries. I want to say sorry to all the fans because unfortunately, we fell down because of those injuries,” Shanaka stated. The final moments were particularly intense, with 28 runs needed from the last six balls.

Shanaka hit three sixes and a four, but Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi defended skillfully, leaving Sri Lanka agonizingly close. Reflecting on his leadership, Shanaka admitted, “Sometimes, as players, we feel the pressure as well. It was a mistake by me. I wanted to say sorry to all the fans for disheartening them.” Despite the setback, he praised emerging talents like Pawan Rathnayake and Dunith Wellalage for their consistent performances, signaling hope for the future of Sri Lankan cricket.

Shanaka emphasized learning from missed opportunities and maintaining mental resilience under pressure as key lessons from the tournament. He concluded with a message of accountability and optimism: “I want to say sorry to all the fans. It’s been tough, but there are positives to build upon for the future.”
