Devdutt Padikkal’s Maiden Double Century Powers Karnataka in Ranji Trophy Semi-Final

Devdutt Padikkal delivered a batting masterclass in the Ranji Trophy semi-final as Karnataka piled up a colossal 689 for 6 against Uttarakhand. Resuming at 148 not out, Padikkal converted his overnight score into a career-defining 232 off 330 balls, hitting 29 fours and three sixes. His maiden double century showcased his maturity, shot selection, and ability to accelerate when required, putting Karnataka firmly in command.

Day 1 momentum, set by KL Rahul’s elegant 141, carried seamlessly into the second day. Padikkal, along with Karun Nair, stitched a 129-run partnership for the third wicket, frustrating Uttarakhand’s bowlers. Nair fell for 60, but Karnataka’s dominance remained intact.

Ravichandran Smaran added an unbeaten 121 off 191 balls, striking 11 boundaries and blending caution with aggression. His crucial partnership with Kruthik Krishna, who contributed 60 off 103 balls, added 123 runs for the sixth wicket, extending Karnataka’s lead and exhausting Uttarakhand’s resources. Lower-order contributions from Vidyadhar Patil (35*) and Smaran ensured an unbroken 81-run stand, taking Karnataka to an imposing 689/6.

Uttarakhand’s brief fightback came when Shreyas Gopal dismissed a few top-order batters, but Smaran’s composure and Kruthik Krishna’s counterattacking knocks quelled any momentum. Off-spinner Avneesh Sudha eventually broke the sixth-wicket stand, yet Karnataka’s position remained unchallenged.

Tactically, Karnataka showcased a perfect balance of patience and aggression. Padikkal’s ability to bat long hours, rotate strike, and punish loose deliveries underlined his leadership from the front. Smaran’s adaptability demonstrated Karnataka’s depth and bench strength in red-ball cricket.

With 689/6 on the board, Karnataka are in a commanding position to dictate terms in the remainder of the Ranji Trophy semi-final. Uttarakhand faces a monumental challenge to stage a comeback. Karnataka’s structured partnerships, milestone performances, and lower-order resilience make them favorites to progress to the Ranji Trophy final, with Padikkal and Smaran leading the charge.
