"Don't Be Fit To Just Look Fit": Amit Mishra's Intriguing Take On Rohit Sharma's Weight Loss

Rohit Sharma’s recent physical transformation has sparked widespread discussion across the cricketing world, with the Indian captain shedding around 11 kilograms ahead of his return to international cricket in October. The change has coincided with a strong run of form, as Rohit impressed in a three-match ODI series with a half-century and a century, before carrying that momentum into the ODIs against South Africa, where he scored 146 runs in two matches, including two fifties.
While Rohit’s performances grabbed headlines, it was former India spinner Amit Mishra’s thoughtful take on fitness that drew particular attention. Speaking on MensXP’s YouTube channel, Mishra stressed that the modern definition of fitness has become overly focused on appearance rather than functionality and overall health.
Mishra emphasized that every athlete’s body is different and warned against blindly chasing a lean physique. According to him, true fitness lies in maintaining one’s natural body type while staying strong, active, and healthy. He advised players to eat well, train consistently, and adopt a sustainable lifestyle rather than extreme fitness regimes aimed solely at looking fit.
He also cautioned against rapid physical transformations, pointing out that short-term results can often lead to long-term physical issues. While acknowledging the importance of gym workouts and outdoor running, Mishra highlighted the need for balance, proper nutrition, adequate sleep, and sensible training routines to ensure long-term well-being.
Reflecting on Rohit Sharma’s career, Mishra pushed back against criticism that labeled the batter as “heavy” earlier in his career. He noted that Rohit had always been fit and active on the field, contributing fully not just with the bat but also in the field. Mishra added that he never felt Rohit lacked agility or stamina, despite public perception.
Rohit Sharma is now set to feature in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, having been named in Mumbai’s squad for the opening rounds. Following that, he is expected to rejoin the Indian team for a three-match ODI series against New Zealand, scheduled to begin on January 11.
