"Dropped Catches, Under-Par Score": MI Coach Tears Into Performance After WPL 2026 Opener Loss To RCB
10 Jan 2026, 10:48 pm

After Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) secured a thrilling 3-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) in the WPL 2026 opener at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai, powered by an all-round performance from Nadine de Klerk; RCB chased 155, with de Klerk hammering 20 runs off the final over to seal a memorable win.
Nadine de Klerk’s Match-Winning Impact
Nadine de Klerk was the standout performer, taking four wickets in MI’s innings before delivering a match-winning half-century. Two crucial dropped catches in the 19th over, by Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amelia Kerr, allowed de Klerk to unleash her power-hitting, showcasing her ability to change matches single-handedly.
Mumbai Indians’ Struggles
MI head coach Lisa Keightley admitted the team’s performance was under par, highlighting dropped catches and a substandard first-innings total as key factors in the loss. "It was well under par to fight and stretch the game out, and to have that position to win the match. But the dropped catches really hurt us in the long run," Keightley said.
Lauren Bell impressed with a spell of 1-14 in four overs, keeping MI competitive.
Key Partnerships and Performances
MI’s innings featured an 82-run stand between S Sajana (45 off 25 balls) and Nicola Carey (40 off 29 balls), recovering from 67/4 to post 154/6.
For RCB, an opening 40-run stand between Grace Harris (25 off 12 balls) and Smriti Mandhana (18 off 13 balls) set the platform.
A middle-order collapse brought MI back into the game, but a 52-run partnership between Nadine de Klerk and Arundhati Reddy (20 off 25 balls) ensured RCB remained in contention.
Strategic Outlook
RCB’s victory highlights the importance of seizing key moments in WPL 2026. Nadine de Klerk’s all-round brilliance, combined with team composure under pressure, underscores RCB’s status as title contenders.
MI, meanwhile, must improve fielding efficiency and capitalize on scoring opportunities to bounce back in upcoming fixtures.
