Hardik Pandya's India Comeback Hangs on BCCI Fitness Test This Week

A New Chapter in India's Test Cricket Begins

India are set to kick off a new phase in their red-ball cricket journey when they host Afghanistan in a one-off Test at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh from June 6. It will be a historic occasion for the venue, which has previously hosted ODIs and T20Is but will now stage its first-ever Test match Hardik Pandya .

Gill Named Captain as India Reshapes Leadership Group

Shubman Gill has been confirmed as India's captain for both the standalone Test and the three-match ODI series that follows. The 24-year-old takes the armband at a crucial time as the BCCI begins building the foundations of a side capable of competing at the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. KL Rahul has been named vice-captain for the Test, while Shreyas Iyer comes back into the ODI squad as Gill's deputy in the 50-over format.

Senior Stars Get Rest and Fitness Tests

India's selection decisions have created plenty of discussion among fans and analysts. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj have both been rested for the entire series, giving the support bowlers a valuable chance to stake their claims. Rishabh Pant has lost his vice-captaincy following a difficult IPL 2026 season, a decision that signals a clear message from selectors. Rohit Sharma is named in the ODI squad but must first clear the BCCI's fitness testing requirements after dealing with hamstring trouble through the end of the IPL.

Virat Kohli Returns to the ODI Setup

Virat Kohli's place in the ODI squad is secure heading into the Afghanistan series, and his return to regular white-ball cricket will be closely watched by fans and selectors alike. With the World Cup now firmly on the horizon, the team management will be keen to start building consistent combinations in the 50-over format.

Fresh Faces Get Their Big Break

Three players have received their maiden India call-ups for this series, namely spinner Harsh Dubey, seamer Gurnoor Brar and batter Prince Yadav. Dubey in particular has attracted attention after breaking records in the Ranji Trophy, and he is expected to play a key role in the Test on what should be a surface suited to spin in New Chandigarh's warm June conditions.

Afghanistan Rest Their Biggest Names for the Test

Afghanistan have made the bold decision to rest star leg-spinner Rashid Khan and powerful batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz from the one-off Test, saving both players for the ODI series that follows. Without Rashid, Afghanistan's bowling attack will look significantly different from what India would have prepared for, potentially giving the hosts an easier run in the Test. Both key players are confirmed to return for the three ODIs from June 13.
