Harshit Rana Likely to Miss Most of IPL 2026 After Knee Surgery Blow

Harshit Rana is set to miss a significant portion of the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after undergoing knee surgery earlier this year. The Kolkata Knight Riders fast bowler is currently in rehabilitation, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team yet to confirm a timeline for his return.
Injury and Recovery Timeline
Rana suffered a ligament strain in his right knee during a warm-up match ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup while representing the India national cricket team. He had to leave the field after bowling just one over in the match against the South Africa national cricket team, which eventually ruled him out of the tournament.
Following the injury, Rana underwent surgery in February and has since been focusing on recovery. However, no definite return date has been set, raising concerns that he could miss the entire IPL season, which begins on March 28.
Second Major Tournament Missed
If Rana fails to recover in time, it will mark his second consecutive major tournament absence. He had already missed the T20 World Cup, where India went on to lift the trophy, with Mohammed Siraj stepping in as his replacement in the squad.
Despite the setback, Rana was recently recognized for his performances, winning the Best International Debutant award at the BCCI Awards, underlining his rapid rise in international cricket before the injury.
KKR’s Bowling Challenges
The absence of Rana adds to the challenges for Kolkata Knight Riders, who are already without Mustafizur Rahman. The Bangladesh pacer was released from the squad following directives from the BCCI amid geopolitical tensions. He has since joined Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League.
To fill the gap, KKR signed Blessing Muzarabani, who withdrew from a deal with Islamabad United to join the IPL side.
Remaining Fast-Bowling Options
Despite the setbacks, KKR still have a strong pool of pace options. Their squad includes Matheesha Pathirana, Vaibhav Arora, Akash Deep, Umran Malik, and Kartik Tyagi, along with allrounders Cameron Green and Ramandeep Singh.
There were also earlier concerns regarding Pathirana’s fitness after he suffered a calf strain during the T20 World Cup, although reports suggest his IPL participation is not expected to be affected.
Season Opener and Fixtures
Kolkata Knight Riders are scheduled to begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Mumbai Indians at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on March 29. They will also face teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants in their early fixtures.
With key players missing and fitness concerns lingering, KKR will need to carefully manage their bowling resources as they aim to remain competitive in the upcoming IPL season.
