India, Bangladesh U19 World Cup Handshake Row Takes Surprising U-Turn
A moment of tension at the U19 World Cup turned into a remarkable display of sportsmanship as India and Bangladesh players eventually shook hands after their Group B clash in Bulawayo on Saturday. The controversy erupted at the toss when stand-in Bangladesh captain Zawad Abrar did not shake hands with India skipper Ayush Mhatre, drawing comparisons with past India-Pakistan encounters at the Asia Cup.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board quickly clarified that the handshake omission was “completely unintentional and resulted from a momentary lapse in concentration.” Following India’s thrilling 18-run victory under the DLS method in a rain-reduced match, the teams lined up to exchange handshakes, putting the incident to rest.

India captain Ayush Mhatre praised his team’s all-round effort. The batting contributions of Kundu, Vaibhav, and Kanishk were instrumental in setting up a defendable total, despite challenging conditions on a damp wicket. India’s Vihaan Malhotra was named Player of the Match for his crucial bowling spell, which helped restrict Bangladesh in the shortened second innings.

The match marked India’s second consecutive win in the tournament after opening with a victory over the USA. Beyond the result, the incident and its resolution serve as a reminder of the importance of sportsmanship, even amid political tensions. The handshake episode will likely be remembered as one of the unique moments in U19 World Cup history.
