cricket team Crush Zimbabwe national cricket team With Record 256 in Chennai
India produced one of the most dominant batting displays in T20 World Cup
history, hammering 256 for 4 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on February
26, 2026. The emphatic 72-run victory kept India’s semi final hopes alive and
lit up the tournament with multiple records.
India Punish Zimbabwe After Losing the Toss
Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza won the toss and chose to field, a decision that
quickly backfired.
Sanju Samson, returning to the XI in place of Rinku Singh, launched an
aggressive start alongside Abhishek Sharma. The pair raced to 48 runs in just
23 deliveries before Blessing Muzarabani broke through.
The early momentum set the tone for what would become a historic innings.
Abhishek Sharma’s Breakthrough Knock
After managing only 15 runs across his first four Super 8 innings, Abhishek
finally delivered on his promise.
He reached his maiden T20 World Cup fifty in just 26 balls and finished with 55
off 30 deliveries, striking at over 183 with four fours and four sixes. His
innings provided the platform for India’s mammoth total and completely shifted
the momentum.
Ishan Kishan added a brisk 38 off 24 balls, while captain Suryakumar Yadav
blasted 33 off 13 deliveries in a trademark counter attacking cameo.
Suryakumar Reaches 4,000 International Runs
The match also marked a personal milestone for Suryakumar Yadav. During his
innings, he crossed 4,000 international runs, reaching 4,024 runs in 148
appearances.
He now ranks among India’s leading T20I run scorers, with four centuries and 29
half centuries across formats.
Hardik and Tilak Deliver the Final Explosion
The late assault came from Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma.
The duo added an unbeaten 84 runs from just 31 balls for the fifth wicket.
Pandya smashed 50 off 23 balls, sealing his half century with a six off the
penultimate delivery of the innings. India finished on 256 for 4, their highest
score in T20 World Cup history and the second highest total ever recorded in
the tournament.
India struck 17 sixes in the innings, the most they have ever hit in a single
T20 World Cup match.
Brian Bennett Fights Lone Battle
Chasing 257 was always going to be a steep challenge for Zimbabwe.
Brian Bennett produced a heroic 97 not out off 59 balls, the highest individual
score by a Zimbabwe player in T20 World Cup history. His innings included eight
fours and six sixes.
He shared a 72 run stand with Raza, who scored 31 off 21 balls. However,
India’s bowling had enough cushion to control the chase.
Arshdeep Singh delivered the most impactful spell, finishing with 3 for 24 as
Zimbabwe closed on 184 for 6.
Focus Turns to West Indies Showdown
Despite the dominant win, Suryakumar Yadav struck a measured tone after the
match. He praised the batting unit but emphasized that India’s bowling must be
sharper ahead of the decisive clash against West Indies at Eden Gardens in
Kolkata on March 1.
India’s semi final fate now hinges on that winner takes all encounter, with
momentum firmly on their side after a record shattering performance in Chennai.
