India Coach Critiques Nitish Reddy After ODI Loss
15 Jan 2026, 9:18 pm

India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate expressed frustration over Nitish Kumar Reddy’s performance in the second ODI against New Zealand. Despite being given an opportunity, Reddy managed only 20 runs and went wicketless in his two overs as New Zealand chased down India’s 284 to win by seven wickets, leveling the three-match series.
Nitish Reddy Needs to Seize Opportunities
Ten Doeschate emphasized that Reddy “often ends up not doing a heck of a lot” despite receiving chances in the playing XI. “For someone making their way, particularly with the bat, it was the perfect chance to spend 15 overs at the crease and push your case for selection,” he said.
Team Selection and Strategy Reflections
The assistant coach noted that India could have benefited from an additional spinner instead of Reddy, given how effectively New Zealand’s spinners exploited the conditions. The sudden inclusion of Ayush Badoni due to Washington Sundar’s unavailability led to Reddy being chosen for the track, but hindsight suggested a different combination might have been preferable.
Rohit Sharma and Batting Adjustments
Ten Doeschate also commented on Rohit Sharma, stating that the senior player is “short on cricket” despite recent Vijay Hazare Trophy appearances. Difficult wickets contributed to his lack of fluency, but his technique remains strong. The coach indicated that KL Rahul’s form allows him to bat at No. 5, providing flexibility to the lineup and enabling better utilization of all-rounders.
Defending Ravindra Jadeja
Regarding Ravindra Jadeja’s recent lack of wickets, ten Doeschate defended him, noting that while he has been light on wickets, his pace and execution are improving, and success is expected to follow.
India will look to address these selection and performance challenges as they prepare for the final ODI against New Zealand. The coach’s candid assessment underscores the importance of seizing opportunities and adapting to match conditions in international cricket.
