IPL 2026 Playoff Race Tightens After Match 39

The Table Is Starting to Tell a Story

With the tournament past the halfway point and all ten teams having played at least seven games, the IPL 2026 points table has developed the kind of shape that creates genuine pressure at both ends. Punjab Kings sit at the top with 13 points from seven matches and no losses. Royal Challengers Bengaluru are second with 12 points from eight, their NRR a massive +1.919 after the nine-wicket win over Delhi that took just 6.3 overs to complete.

The Top Four Right Now

Punjab Kings, RCB, Sunrisers Hyderabad (10 points), and Rajasthan Royals (10 points) currently occupy the playoff positions. SRH and RR are separated only on Net Run Rate. Below them, Gujarat Titans sit fifth with eight points from eight games, still very much in the hunt. The tightest fight in the table is between positions three through six, where a single result can shift the standings significantly.

The Teams Under Real Pressure

CSK and Delhi Capitals are both on six points from eight matches. They are not yet mathematically eliminated but need a near-perfect run in the second half of the league stage to qualify. KKR are eighth with five points. Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants sit at the bottom with four points each, and their margin for error is essentially gone. For MI and LSG in particular, every remaining match is now a must-win, and even that formula may not be enough depending on how other results fall.

What Happens Next

Punjab Kings host Rajasthan Royals tonight, a match that could see PBKS move to 15 points and loosen the grip of the teams below them chasing top-two spots. RCB travel to Bengaluru next for what is expected to be a strong home run. The second half of the league stage will separate title contenders from playoff hopefuls and playoff hopefuls from teams already packing up. With 31 matches remaining and four spots to fill, the race is well and truly on.
