The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have appointed former England national cricket team wicketkeeper James Foster as their new fielding coach ahead of the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League. He will work under head coach Stephen Fleming as part of a revamped support staff.
Strong Coaching Experience
Foster, who represented England between 2001 and 2009, has built an impressive coaching resume since retiring from professional cricket in 2018. His latest success came in the International League T20, where he guided the Desert Vipers to the title as head coach earlier this year.
In addition to franchise cricket, Foster has also worked with international teams, contributing to the coaching setups of both England and the New Zealand national cricket team. He was recently named assistant coach of Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred, further underlining his growing reputation as a coach.
Familiar Face in IPL Setup
This will not be Foster’s first stint in the IPL. He previously worked with the Kolkata Knight Riders as a fielding coach and assistant coach, gaining valuable experience in Indian conditions and franchise cricket dynamics.
At CSK, he joins an experienced coaching group that includes batting coach Michael Hussey and bowling coach Eric Simons.
Working Closely with CSK Stars
Foster is expected to play a key role in improving CSK’s fielding standards and will also work closely with the team’s wicketkeepers. This includes legendary former captain MS Dhoni and new signing Sanju Samson, who recently earned accolades for his performances on the global stage.
His expertise as a former wicketkeeper could prove invaluable in mentoring players and sharpening the team’s overall defensive skills.
IPL 2026 Campaign Begins
Five-time champions CSK will kick off their IPL 2026 season against Rajasthan Royals on March 30 in Guwahati. They will then face Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Delhi Capitals in their opening fixtures.
After a disappointing IPL 2025 season where they finished at the bottom of the table with just four wins, CSK will be aiming for a strong comeback. The addition of Foster to the coaching staff signals their intent to rebuild and return to winning ways.
With a blend of experienced coaches and star players, CSK will look to regain their dominance in the IPL and challenge for another title in 2026.
