Jos Buttler has reaffirmed his desire to continue playing for the England national cricket team despite a disappointing campaign at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. The former captain admitted his future is uncertain but insisted he still has strong ambitions to represent his country.
Tough Tournament for Buttler
Buttler endured a difficult World Cup, scoring just 87 runs across eight innings. His recent ICC record has also raised concerns, with only one half-century in his last four global tournaments.
Despite the slump, Buttler emphasized that he has been playing some of the best cricket of his career in recent years and remains confident he can rediscover his form.
Eyes on England Comeback
With around 18 months remaining on his central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board, Buttler is hopeful of being part of England’s upcoming home series against India national cricket team, which includes five T20Is and three ODIs.
However, he acknowledged that selection is no longer in his control, especially after stepping down from captaincy.
Time Away to Reset
Following the World Cup, Buttler took a break from cricket, spending time in France with his family to mentally reset. He described the time away as “refreshing” and important for regaining perspective after a challenging tournament.
Buttler admitted that despite his efforts, things simply did not click during the World Cup, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the sport.
IPL Opportunity Ahead
Buttler is now set to return to action in the Indian Premier League, where he will represent the Gujarat Titans. The tournament presents a valuable opportunity for him to regain form and push for a return to England’s squad.
Backing England Setup
Despite criticism surrounding England’s recent performances, Buttler backed the current leadership group, praising Harry Brook and head coach Brendon McCullum for creating a positive team environment.
He also acknowledged India national cricket team as deserving champions, describing them as a “serious team” following their dominant performances in the knockout stages.
Uncertain but Not Finished
Buttler’s international future may be uncertain, but his determination to continue remains clear. With experience, proven match-winning ability, and upcoming opportunities in franchise cricket, he will be aiming to make a strong case for selection in the months ahead.
England’s selectors now face a key decision: whether to back a proven performer through a lean patch or look towards a new generation of white-ball talent.
