KKR IPL 2026: The Defending Champions' Season Falls Apart
Kolkata Knight Riders were one of the most feared teams in the competition heading into IPL 2026. Their 2024 title win was built on explosive batting, smart spin bowling, and a team culture that felt genuinely strong. Yet IPL 2026 has not delivered the same results, and KKR now find themselves in a difficult position in the points table with the playoffs slipping away from their grasp.
What Has Gone Wrong With KKR's Batting
KKR's batting lineup was supposed to be one of the deepest in the competition but has been wildly inconsistent throughout the season. The top order has produced some excellent individual innings but very few collective performances where multiple batters have fired in the same game. Their tendency to collapse from a strong position has been a recurring theme, and the inability to build partnerships beyond the powerplay has cost them several matches that were well within their reach.
The Bowling Unit That Has Lost Its Bite
KKR's bowling was a genuine strength in their title-winning campaign but the same unit has struggled to replicate those performances in 2026. Wickets in the middle overs, which were a defining strength previously, have been harder to come by. Teams have worked out how to attack certain bowlers, and KKR have not always found the tactical answers in time. The spin bowling that was so effective on home surfaces has been less potent on pitches outside Kolkata.
Kohli's Century and the RCB Game That Hurt KKR
The defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur, where Virat Kohli scored an unbeaten century, was one of the more damaging results of KKR's season. Not only did it cost them two crucial points but it also delivered a blow to their net run rate that they have struggled to recover from. Losses like that one tend to linger in the dressing room, and it showed in KKR's performances in the matches that followed.
Can KKR Turn It Around in Remaining Matches
Kolkata Knight Riders are not out of the playoff picture entirely, but they need near-perfect results to turn things around. Their remaining fixtures offer them the opportunity to string together wins, but they need both points and significant victories to improve their net run rate. The talent in the squad is not in question. Whether the team can find the collective form and belief they showed in 2024 in the remaining time available is the real challenge facing their management and players right now.
