KL Rahul produced a standout performance in the second ODI against New Zealand, earning strong praise from India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate despite the hosts suffering a seven-wicket defeat. The innings once again underlined his importance in India’s evolving ODI batting structure.

        

Ten Doeschate described the knock as a “quality hundred,” emphasising how KL Rahul fits seamlessly into the number five role. The coaching staff believes his presence allows India to extend batting depth while accommodating all-rounders lower down the order.

According to the assistant coach, KL Rahul gives India the flexibility to push all-rounders into the sixth, seventh, or eighth positions. This approach has been a key strategy over the last 18 months, aimed at strengthening the lower middle order and offering greater stability in long chases.

Batting first, India posted 284/7 with contributions from Shubman Gill and steady support at the top. The innings was anchored by KL Rahul, who remained unbeaten on 112 from 92 balls, combining composure with controlled aggression to guide India to a competitive total.

Despite the effort from KL Rahul, New Zealand chased down 285 with authority. Will Young and Daryl Mitchell stitched a decisive partnership, with Mitchell’s unbeaten 131 sealing the visitors’ highest successful ODI chase in India.

While the defeat levelled the series 1-1, India took positives from KL Rahul continuing to deliver under pressure. His consistency at number five strengthens India’s lineup and provides clarity heading into the series-deciding third ODI.
