IPL 2026 Schedule Release Delayed Amid Election and Venue
Concerns
Cricket fans are eagerly anticipating the IPL 2026 season,
but the BCCI is yet to release the full fixture list for the 19th edition of
the Indian Premier League. The IPL 2026 schedule, which was expected to be
announced well in advance, has been delayed by a combination of logistical,
political, and infrastructural challenges.
Election Clashes Stall IPL 2026 Planning
The most significant reason behind the IPL 2026 schedule
delay is the pending announcement of Assembly election dates in West Bengal,
Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry. These elections are expected to fall
in April and May — the heart of the IPL 2026 season. During election periods,
local security forces are redirected to polling duties, potentially forcing
venue changes and disrupting match logistics. The BCCI is in close contact with
the Election Commission to confirm poll dates before finalising the IPL 2026
schedule.
Venue Headaches for RCB and Rajasthan Royals
Two franchises are particularly affected. Royal Challengers
Bengaluru cannot yet confirm M Chinnaswamy Stadium as their home venue for IPL
2026, with the ground undergoing critical safety upgrades after infrastructure
concerns surfaced in June 2025. RCB have conducted recces in Raipur as a backup
option. Rajasthan Royals, meanwhile, have sought formal indemnity from the
Rajasthan government to host IPL 2026 matches at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in
Jaipur, while also exploring alternatives including Guwahati.
When Will the IPL 2026 Schedule Be Announced?
Insiders suggest the IPL 2026 schedule will be released in
phases, beginning with an initial set of confirmed fixtures once election dates
are known. A full announcement is expected by early March 2026 at the latest.
The tournament itself is confirmed to start on March 26, 2026, and run through
May 31, featuring 10 teams across an expanded 84-match format — the largest IPL
season in history. The IPL 2026 season also marks Tata's continued title
sponsorship and will follow a three-week gap after the T20 World Cup 2026 final
on March 8.
