UP Warriorz have officially named Meg Lanning as their captain for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 season, in a significant leadership move ahead of the tournament beginning January 9. The franchise confirmed her appointment in a social media announcement on Sunday, signaling a fresh chapter for the team that has yet to win a WPL title.
Lanning, a legendary figure in women’s cricket, was acquired by UP Warriorz for ₹1.9 crore at the recent mega auction after being released by Delhi Capitals, where she had led the side to three consecutive finals. As one of the most successful captains in the sport, she has led the Australian national team to one ODI World Cup and four T20 World Cup titles, showcasing her deep strategic understanding and composure under pressure.
In the WPL, Lanning has been a consistent performer, amassing 952 runs in 27 matches, making her one of the tournament’s top run‑scorers. Her experience and ability to guide teams through high‑pressure situations played a key role in the Warriorz selecting her as captain over other contenders.
UP Warriorz head coach Abhishek Nayar praised Lanning’s leadership qualities, saying she brings “a rare combination of experience, clarity, and calmness” to the role. The franchise is hopeful that her presence will help unite a squad built around a strong mix of international stars and Indian talent and propel the team into genuine title contention.
Lanning expressed her excitement about the new role, stating it was “a real honour” to lead the Warriorz and that she was looking forward to the challenge ahead as the league enters its fourth season. The WPL 2026 campaign will see UP Warriorz open their season against Gujarat Giants at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, as they aim to improve on their previous seasons’ results.
