Mumbai Indians Officially Out of IPL 2026 Playoff Race

A Season to Forget for the Most Successful IPL Franchise
Mumbai Indians hold the record for the most IPL titles in the history of the competition. Five championships across various seasons have made them the benchmark against which all other franchises are measured. That history makes IPL 2026 all the more difficult to process, as the franchise finds itself ninth in the standings with four points and effectively out of the running for the playoffs with several games still remaining in the league stage.
The losses have come in a variety of ways, which in some respects is even more frustrating than being beaten convincingly in every game. MI have had matches where the batting has performed well only for the bowling to let them down, and other occasions where the bowling was reasonable but the batting collapsed under pressure. That inconsistency across departments throughout the course of a long season is the defining characteristic of a team that is not performing to its potential.
The Rickelton Innings That Highlighted the Problem
Ryan Rickelton's extraordinary innings of 123 not out against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium set a new record for the highest individual score by a Mumbai Indians batter. It was a genuinely spectacular piece of batting that deserved to be on the winning side. The fact that it came in a losing cause said everything about MI's season. Scoring 244 and still losing is a result that encapsulates the bowling department's inability to take wickets and contain aggressive batting lineups.
Jasprit Bumrah has been below his very best by his exceptional standards, and Trent Boult has been unable to consistently generate the swing that makes him so dangerous in favourable conditions. The middle-order bowling options have been expensive, and with no obvious solution presenting itself, the situation became progressively harder to reverse.
Hardik Pandya's Leadership Has Been Under Strain
Hardik Pandya's captaincy tenure at MI has faced scrutiny throughout this season. He is a gifted all-round cricketer but captaincy in the IPL demands clear communication and consistent game plans that hold up under pressure. The team has not looked settled in its approach to either batting or bowling strategy, and there have been moments where tactical decisions appeared reactive rather than proactive.
Whether Pandya continues as captain next season will be a question for the franchise to answer. The priority now is to finish the remaining games with competitive performances, partly for the benefit of the players' own development and partly to give some meaning to the second half of the campaign.
What Needs to Change for Next Season
Mumbai Indians are a franchise with deep resources, passionate supporters and a history of bouncing back strongly from poor seasons. Their turnarounds in previous IPL editions have been decisive and complete, built on smart planning in the auction and consistent team selection once the season begins.
The key changes they need involve the bowling attack above all else. A new ball bowler who can take powerplay wickets reliably, a death bowling specialist who can restrict the best hitters in the competition, and a spinner capable of building pressure in the middle overs are the three components that could transform their campaign next year. Given MI's resources, getting those pieces in place is achievable. But IPL 2026 will be remembered as the year the five-time champions got it badly wrong.
