The Bangladesh T20 team has found itself at the center of a major logistical and diplomatic issue ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, with the ICC set to respond to the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s venue change request within days. The BCB has formally raised security concerns and sought to move its scheduled matches out of India, intensifying uncertainty just weeks before the tournament begins.

The ICC is currently reviewing the official submission made by the BCB, which asked for Bangladesh T20 group-stage fixtures to be shifted from India to Sri Lanka. The request followed the release of fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, a decision influenced by the BCCI amid growing political tensions between the two nations.

Bangladesh are presently scheduled to play in Kolkata and Mumbai, but the ICC is unlikely to approve a complete relocation. Instead, alternative Indian venues such as Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram have been proposed to ensure logistical continuity for Bangladesh T20 matches.

BCB president Aminul Islam confirmed that decisions regarding Bangladesh T20 participation are being taken in consultation with the government. While Chennai was initially rejected, the BCB has not ruled it out entirely, pending further discussions at the governmental level.

The Bangladesh government has also indicated that it expects direct communication from Indian authorities regarding security arrangements before approving travel plans for the Bangladesh T20 squad.

The ICC may cite the recent presence of Bangladesh umpire Sharfuddoula Saikat in India as evidence of safe conditions. Saikat officiated during the India–New Zealand ODI in Vadodara and is expected to serve as a match official during the World Cup, alongside Gazi Sohel, reinforcing the ICC’s stance on Bangladesh T20 safety.

With less than four weeks remaining before teams arrive for practice sessions, the ICC is keen to resolve the Bangladesh T20 venue issue swiftly. Delays could disrupt scheduling and preparations, making a timely decision critical for tournament stability.
