Pakistan Launch Major NCA Camps as Red-Ball Rebuild Begins in Earnest

Pakistan NCA Camps Are Open for Business

Pakistan cricket's rebuilding phase has officially started. The Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed on June 7, 2026, that 49 players will begin separate red-ball and white-ball training camps at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore, with head coaches Sarfaraz Ahmed and Mike Hesson overseeing the respective programmes.

The Red-Ball Camp Kicks Off

The red-ball camp began on June 8, 2026, and runs until July 10, featuring 22 players under Test head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed. On the opening day, Director of High Performance Aqib Javed addressed the squad and laid out the goals of the programme. Players will work on fitness, technical skills, and scenario-based practice matches throughout the camp. Those who featured in Pakistan's recent ODI series against Australia will join from June 15. Notable red-ball names include Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Shan Masood, and Saud Shakeel.

Senior Omissions Stir Debate

The camp has already generated controversy. Fast bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Ali, along with left-arm spinner Noman Ali, were all left out of the red-ball setup despite contributing to Pakistan's most recent Test series against Bangladesh. Hasan Ali claimed 8 wickets across the two Tests, while Noman Ali has been a regular fixture in the bowling attack. Their absence raises questions about the selectors' vision for Pakistan's Test future.

Mike Hesson's White-Ball Mission

The white-ball camp, under Hesson, begins June 15 and runs through September 18, with 27 players involved. Shaheen Shah Afridi is in this group and is expected to work on his red-ball bowling alongside his white-ball preparation. Hesson has been clear about raising strike rates and attacking intent, which has been a major talking point in Pakistan's ODI cricket.

What Lies Ahead

Pakistan face West Indies in a two-match Test series in Trinidad and Tobago in July, followed by England in August and September, and Sri Lanka at home in the autumn. This camp structure is designed to prepare players for that demanding run of fixtures and ensure both formats have dedicated, focused coaching resources.
