Pant's Captaincy Under the Microscope as Lucknow Super Giants Crash to Six Defeats

Six Defeats and a Season Beyond Saving

Lucknow Super Giants have now lost six consecutive matches in IPL 2026, dropping to the bottom of the points table with four points from nine games. A campaign that started with two wins from three games has disintegrated completely, and the margin of the defeats tells its own story. LSG have repeatedly set or chased manageable targets and found a way to fall short, and the pattern of failing in the middle overs has been consistent enough to suggest a structural problem rather than a run of bad luck.

After Monday's loss to Mumbai Indians at Wankhede, Rishabh Pant was candid in his post-match remarks. He acknowledged that LSG had fallen ten to fifteen runs short and pointed to their inability to contain the Mumbai powerplay. But the post-match honesty did little to hide the fact that he himself has managed just 15 runs in this game and has been one of the least productive batters in the tournament relative to expectation and salary.

Pant's Personal Form Is a Growing Concern

Before IPL 2026, Pant was positioned as the emotional and tactical centrepiece of the Lucknow franchise following his comeback from a serious road accident. His presence alone was considered a marquee asset. But his batting numbers this season tell a difficult story. He has struggled to find his timing and timing of entry, scoring slowly when LSG need acceleration and departing cheaply when stability is required. His leadership in the field has also drawn scrutiny, with Mitchell Marsh pointing out after one earlier defeat that bowling changes and field settings could have been sharper at critical moments.

Aiden Markram's quiet contributions have been among the few positives. Mohammed Shami, Mohsin Khan, and Prince Yadav have bowled with discipline throughout the season, giving LSG competitive first innings totals when the batting has done its job. The problem is that the batting has rarely done its job consistently enough.

What Comes Next for LSG

Mathematically, LSG remain alive. They need to win every remaining fixture and benefit from a string of unlikely results elsewhere. In reality, the cricket world has moved on from Lucknow as a playoff contender. Their next game against RCB will be a test of character more than anything else, an opportunity to show their fanbase that the quality in the squad has not disappeared, even if the season has.
