Australia captain Pat Cummins is facing uncertainty over his participation in the 2024 T20 World Cup as he continues to manage a back stress injury. The fast bowler missed the opening matches of the ongoing Ashes series against England before making a return in the third Test in Adelaide, where he claimed six wickets and played a key role in Australia securing a 3–0 series victory.
Despite the strong comeback, Cummins will take no further part in the Ashes, with his focus now shifting to recovery. His availability for the T20 World Cup remains unclear, prompting concern within the Australian camp.
Head coach Andrew McDonald addressed the situation, stating that while the team remains hopeful, no confirmation can yet be given regarding Cummins’ fitness for the tournament. The injury, diagnosed as a lumbar stress reaction during Australia’s tour of the West Indies, has been closely monitored and carefully managed throughout his rehabilitation.
In Cummins’ absence, Mitchell Marsh will continue to captain Australia in T20 internationals as the team prepares for the global event. The T20 World Cup, set to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka, begins on February 7, 2024, with Australia scheduled to face Ireland on February 11 in Colombo.
