Pathum Nissanka delivered a masterclass in batting as Sri Lanka secured a commanding eight-wicket win over Australia, earning their place in the Super Eights of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Chasing a challenging target of 182, Nissanka’s unbeaten 100 off just 52 balls, along with Kusal Mendis’s 38-ball 51, propelled Sri Lanka to victory in 18 overs. Pavan Rathnayake added a late flourish with 28 not out, ensuring a dominant finish.
Nissanka’s innings featured 10 fours and five sixes, showcasing his ability to take control in high-pressure situations. His aggressive yet calculated strokeplay underlined his status as a match-winner and highlighted Sri Lanka’s depth in batting. The partnership of 97 runs between Nissanka and Mendis steadied the innings after the early dismissal of Kusal Perera, giving the team full control during the chase.
Australia had started explosively, with returning players Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head putting on a 104-run opening stand. Marsh scored 54 off 27 balls, and Head contributed 56 from 29, giving Australia a total of 181. However, Sri Lanka’s bowlers, led by leg-spinner Dushan Hemantha with figures of 3/37, tightened the game in the back 10 overs. Australia’s last four wickets fell for just six runs, demonstrating the effectiveness of Sri Lanka’s bowling attack.
Sri Lanka’s strategic bowling and fielding were pivotal in curbing Australia’s momentum. Despite a blistering start and early injuries to Matheesha Pathirana, captain Dasun Shanaka managed the attack skillfully, and Hemantha’s leg-spin proved decisive. The disciplined bowling and agile fielding created opportunities, allowing Nissanka’s batting brilliance to dominate the chase.
The victory reinforces Sri Lanka’s credentials in the tournament and showcases Nissanka’s ability to deliver under pressure. As Australia’s qualification hopes now depend on other group results, Sri Lanka enters the Super Eights with confidence, with Nissanka and Mendis leading the charge
