PBKS vs GT on May 3: Table Toppers Face In-Form Titans

Table Leaders Meet High-Flying Challengers in Ahmedabad

Gujarat Titans will host Punjab Kings on May 3 in one of the most intriguing fixtures of the IPL 2026 season. PBKS arrive as table leaders with 13 points and a largely impressive campaign behind them, while GT come into the match on the back of consecutive victories that have lifted them firmly into the playoff conversation. Two teams with very different momentum lines will make for a compelling contest in Ahmedabad.

For Punjab, this match comes three days after their first defeat of the season against Rajasthan Royals. The loss was useful in some ways as it exposed vulnerabilities in their bowling that had been masked by spectacular batting displays earlier in the campaign. Coming up against a GT side led by Shubman Gill will test whether PBKS can respond with the level of composure that their overall table position demands.

GT's Recent Form Has Been Exceptional

Gujarat Titans have found their best cricket at exactly the right time of the season. Back-to-back wins, including a commanding victory over defending champions RCB, have lifted their confidence significantly. The collective contributions from Rashid Khan, Arshad Khan, Kagiso Rabada and the returning impact player Rahul Tewatia have given GT an all-round balance that was not always visible earlier in the tournament.

Shubman Gill's 43 off 18 balls against RCB showcased the attacking instincts that make him such a dangerous opener when he is in touch. As captain, he has also been making sharper decisions with the ball, particularly in the use of his spin resources in the middle overs where conditions at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad tend to favour the slower bowlers.

The Arshdeep Situation Hangs Over PBKS

The one narrative hovering over PBKS heading into this match is the form of Arshdeep Singh. Going at almost 11 runs per over with eight wickets in eight games, he has not provided the new-ball penetration that a team chasing the title will need in the knockout stages. Against a GT top order containing Gill and Jos Buttler, who are both capable of taking any powerplay apart, the requirement for Arshdeep to be at his best is obvious.

Fast bowling coach James Hopes has kept the message positive within the camp, saying that the team has used the break well to regroup and that Arshdeep is a quality bowler who will find his form. The upcoming training sessions in Ahmedabad before the May 3 fixture will be an important opportunity to work on the adjustments that the data is clearly suggesting are necessary.

Batting Firepower on Both Sides Promises Entertainment

If the bowling for both teams is in question at various points, nobody is doubting the quality of the batting in this fixture. PBKS have scored 200 or more on multiple occasions this season and have batters at every level of the innings who can hit cleanly and powerfully. The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Sam Curran and a host of aggressive middle-order options give them a depth that is hard to bowl out cheaply.

GT's batting is equally capable of posting large totals. Gill and Buttler at the top, with the experience of the middle order and the ability to use the impact player rule cleverly, means that any total PBKS post will be tested thoroughly.

A win for GT would take them to 12 points and potentially into the top four depending on results elsewhere. A win for PBKS would extend their lead at the top and ease the pressure that their first defeat has started to build. With so much at stake, expect both sides to prepare meticulously and produce a match that genuinely matters to the playoff race.
