Political Factors Were Mentioned: Mustafizur Rahman’s KKR Release Explained By Ex‑Bangladesh Star
Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman’s expected Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 stint came to an unexpected early end after Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were instructed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to release him from their squad, a move that has ignited debate across both cricket and political circles.

Mustafizur had been bought by KKR for a record Rs 9.20 crore at the auction, marking him as one of the highest‑paid Bangladeshi players in IPL history. However, amid rising diplomatic tensions and public backlash related to broader India–Bangladesh relations, the Indian board’s directive forced the franchise to drop him before the season began.

Former Bangladesh cricketer Khaled Mahmud described the episode as “truly a sad incident,” saying he heard political factors were mentioned in the discussions about the release. He suggested that the controversy seemed linked to larger forces and even religion‑based politics, adding that fans had looked forward to supporting KKR with Mustafizur’s inclusion as they once did when Shakib Al Hasan played for the franchise.

The release has sparked a strong reaction at home. Some officials in Bangladesh are reportedly considering measures including a ban on IPL broadcasts in the country, while calls have emerged to request the ICC to move Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup matches out of India to neutral venues such as Sri Lanka.

Another former Bangladesh player, Rajin Saleh, echoed the sentiment that the decision was insulting to Bangladesh cricket, arguing that if India could not guarantee security for a single player in a franchise tournament, it raised concerns about larger international commitments. Saleh stressed that Mustafizur has been one of Bangladesh’s most successful bowlers and deserved the opportunity to play without controversy.

The incident has also stirred political commentaries, with critics outside sport warning against mixing politics with cricket. The fallout highlights how sporting decisions, especially in high‑profile events like the IPL, can become entangled with diplomatic tensions and public sentiment, especially between neighboring countries with complex ties
