Sunrisers Eastern Cape also secured their position as the unquestioned rulers of the SA20 league on Sunday, as they claimed their third championship by beating Pretoria Capitals in an exciting Final of Season 4 of the SA20 league. The win was another reminder of the South African premier T20 supremacy of the franchise and provided another golden book to their growing legacy.

Playing with a goal of a target of 159 in the legendary Newlands Stadium, Sunrisers Eastern Cape exhibited composure and calmness when faced with pressure. Captain Tristan Stubbs and opener Matthew Breetzke had made unbeaten 114-run partnership on the fifth wicket, and led their team to a glorious six-wicket victory with four balls to spare. They became a partnership that reversed the course of the match and won the title in a dramatic way.

The Sunrisers Eastern Cape won the SA20 prize money of Rand 32.5 million equivalent to INR 18.48 crore with this championship, and Pretoria Capitals the runners-up prize money of Rand 16.25 million equivalent to INR 9.23 crore. This prize money is now representative of the rising status and financial power of the SA20 tournament.

Earlier in the game, Dewald Brevis made one of the best performances that had ever been witnessed in Newlands. Pretoria Capitals were 8/2 at the time of coming in, but Brevis started a magnificent reversal. The record signing of the SA20 was a whopping 101 out of 56 balls with eight fours and seven sixes that gave the Capitals a competitive figure of 158/7.

Throughout much of the pursuit, it seemed that Pretoria Capitals had made enough to win their maiden concerning the SA20 title of the year. But Stubbs swung the tide with a series of 21 runs off Gideon Peters, who had a solitary over to face, and this was Stubbs’ 18 th over. The crowd at Newlands felt a special ending when 12 runs were off the last two overs of Lungi Ngidi, and Stubbs put a close to the game with two successive sixes of Bryce Parsons.

Coach of Sunrisers Eastern Cape Adrian Birrell congratulated both sides at the end of the final describing it as a good match and said he felt proud that his team had made four successive finals in SA20. He also pointed out the depth of the squad and team work that saw the team win yet another historic victory in the SA20 Season 4.

This victory again proves the prowess of Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the South African T20 league making it the most successful team in the SA20 history.
