Punjab Kings' Historic Collapse: How the Best Team in IPL 2026 Fell Apart
18 May 2026, 3:35 pm

The Best Start Anyone Could Ask For
At the halfway point of IPL 2026, Punjab Kings looked like the team every other franchise feared. They had seven wins from seven games, which included an extraordinary record 265-run chase against Delhi Capitals and back-to-back dominant victories that had pundits calling them title favourites. Shreyas Iyer was in brilliant form, the bowling attack was varied and effective, and the energy around the squad felt electric. Nobody saw what was coming next.
Six Losses in a Row and Counting
Since that high point, PBKS have lost every single match they have played. Six games, six defeats. The losses include a 23-run defeat to RCB on Sunday in Dharamshala, which was their last home game of the season. They have gone from top of the table to sitting fourth with 13 points and no margin for error, needing a win against an already-eliminated Lucknow Super Giants side and multiple results to go their way just to have a chance of finishing in the top four. What started as a minor wobble has turned into the most dramatic in-season collapse the IPL has seen in years.
What Went Wrong at Dharamshala
The home ground problem is the clearest thread through PBKS's collapse. They won three of their four matches at their primary ground in Mullanpur. At Dharamshala, they lost all three games. Sunday's defeat followed a painful pattern. Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed both openers, Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, in the first three overs. Shreyas Iyer fell for just 1, and PBKS found themselves at 19 for 3 inside four overs chasing 223. Shashank Singh's fighting 56 off 27 balls gave them a glimmer, but 40 off the last 2 overs was always going to be too much. PBKS finished at 199, 23 runs short, and their season is now on life support.
The Numbers Behind the Meltdown
PBKS's death bowling economy across the losing streak climbed beyond 10 runs per over, a fatal flaw when opposition teams keep posting 200-plus totals. They conceded 200-plus scores nine times this season, the most of any team. The batting, which looked so fearless earlier in the tournament, began to crumble against pace in the powerplay. Top-order contributions dried up, and the middle order could not compensate game after game. A team that chased 265 with ease was now struggling to chase 180.
Can They Still Save Their Season?
Technically, PBKS are not eliminated. One match remains against LSG in Lucknow on May 23. A win takes them to 15 points, and they would need CSK, RR, and KKR to all drop further points to sneak through. It is possible but unlikely. What is certain is that their 2026 IPL campaign has become a cautionary tale about momentum in sport. When a team loses confidence, the slide can be impossible to stop.
