England all-rounder Jacob Bethell has been appointed captain of Birmingham Phoenix for the 2026 season of The Hundred, marking another significant milestone in the young star’s rapidly developing career. The 22-year-old will lead the franchise in the upcoming tournament after previously representing the team as one of its key players in recent seasons.
Bethell takes over the captaincy from Liam Livingstone, who has moved to London Spirit ahead of the 2026 competition. His appointment reflects the confidence the franchise has in his leadership qualities and growing reputation in international and franchise cricket.
Despite his young age, Bethell has already gained valuable leadership experience. In 2025, he became the youngest player to captain the England men’s team when he led the side in a T20I series against Ireland. He has also captained England Under-19s and served as vice-captain in several recent white-ball tours.
Bethell’s recent performances have further strengthened his reputation as one of England’s most exciting young talents. During the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, he produced a spectacular century against India in the semi-final in Mumbai, scoring 105 runs from just 48 balls. Although England ultimately lost the match, his explosive knock highlighted his ability to perform on the biggest stage.
The Birmingham franchise believes Bethell’s calm approach and tactical awareness make him well suited to lead the side. Men’s head coach Shane Bond praised the young all-rounder, describing him as a mature leader who has already shown the ability to inspire teammates and handle high-pressure situations.
Bethell expressed pride at being given the opportunity to captain the team and said he was excited to lead the Phoenix in front of their home supporters at Edgbaston. He also emphasized his desire to help the team compete strongly for the title in the upcoming season.
The Hundred will run from July 21 to August 16, 2026, featuring eight city-based teams competing in the 100-ball format across England and Wales. Each franchise will play a series of group matches before the top teams progress to the knockout stages.
With Bethell now leading Birmingham Phoenix, the team will hope his dynamic batting, all-round abilities, and growing leadership experience can guide them to a strong campaign in the 2026 tournament.
