Rishabh Pant Has the Talent, LSG Lacks the Team

IPL 2026 Rishabh Pant and LSG: A Captain Without a Team to Match His Ambition

The Burden of Being LSG's Best Batter and Captain

When Lucknow Super Giants retained Rishabh Pant as their captain ahead of IPL 2026, they were signalling a new direction. Pant is one of the most gifted T20 batters in the world, a player whose natural ability to take the game away from an opposition inside three overs is almost unmatched in any team. But talent at the top does not automatically translate into team success, and 10 matches into IPL 2026, LSG are bottom of the table with just four points from three wins. Pant's own performances have been inconsistent, but the team context has made consistent individual batting genuinely difficult.

Where LSG's Problems Really Begin

LSG's biggest issue in IPL 2026 has not been Pant. It has been the inconsistency of the batters around him. Mitchell Marsh has been their most reliable run-scorer with 367 runs in the season at close to 37 per innings, but the rest of the middle order has collapsed repeatedly at crucial moments. Nicholas Pooran has been capable of scoring quickly but has failed to build meaningful partnerships. Aiden Markram has been below his best for much of the campaign. When two or three early wickets fall against good bowling, the pressure that lands on Pant is simply too great for one batsman to carry on his own every night.

The LSG Bowling Attack Has Bright Spots

Not everything has been bleak for LSG. Prince Yadav has been one of the discoveries of IPL 2026 with 16 wickets in 10 matches, a remarkable return for a young pacer who was not widely known before the season started. His disciplined spells and ability to pick up wickets at key moments have given LSG real quality in their pace attack. Mohammed Shami, when fit, has also been dangerous with the new ball. The problem is that bowling well often has not been enough when the batting collapses keep delivering under-par totals for the bowling unit to defend.

One Win That Showed What LSG Could Be

LSG's most recent win, a nine-run victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru, offered a glimpse of what this squad can produce when everything clicks. Pant batted with the freedom and authority that reminded everyone why LSG made him their captain and central figure. That performance, built around a good team total and smart bowling at the death, felt like the real LSG rather than the struggling team that has been on the wrong end of most results this season. Unfortunately, it came too late and too infrequently to change their overall standing.

What the Rest of the Season Holds for Pant

With LSG effectively eliminated from playoff contention, the remaining matches are more about pride and personal form than competitive stakes. For Pant specifically, these games are an opportunity to end the season in the kind of form that helps him enter the international calendar with confidence and momentum. The talent that made him the most expensive buy in recent IPL history has not disappeared. In an LSG shirt in 2026, it simply has not had the team support needed to show itself consistently. That is a problem for the franchise to address at the next auction, not a verdict on the player himself.
