Parag Caught Vaping on Live Broadcast During RR's Chase
Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag has landed himself in trouble off the field after being caught using a vape device in the dressing room during RR's IPL 2026 match against Punjab Kings on April 28 in New Chandigarh. The incident was captured on the live broadcast and spread quickly across social media, generating significant backlash from fans, pundits and cricket administrators.
The BCCI confirmed the sanction on April 30, stating that Parag had breached Article 2.21 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which covers conduct that brings the game into disrepute. He was fined 25 percent of his match fee and handed one demerit point. Match referee Amit Sharma handled the proceedings, and Parag admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction without contesting it.
BCCI Signals Possibility of Stronger Action
What makes this situation more serious than a standard code of conduct fine is the BCCI's language in the official statement. The board said it was """"exploring other options to initiate proceedings for stringent action against the erring team, its officials and player/s to ensure that the reputation of IPL remains intact."""" This wording suggests that a 25 percent fine may not be the end of the matter, and both Parag personally and the Rajasthan Royals franchise could face further scrutiny.
The incident also adds to a series of off-field issues for RR this season. Just weeks earlier, team manager Romi Bhinder was fined one lakh rupees for using a mobile phone in the dugout in violation of protocol. The cumulative effect of these disciplinary matters is damaging for a franchise that is otherwise having a strong on-field season.
Legal Dimension Adds to the Seriousness
The vaping incident carries consequences beyond just cricket's code of conduct. Electronic cigarettes are banned in India under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act of 2019, which makes it illegal to produce, sell, store or use e-cigarettes within the country. First-time violators can face fines and potential imprisonment under the law. The BCCI is reportedly investigating how the device was brought into the stadium, as dressing rooms are professionally regulated spaces where such items should not be present.
Public health advocates have been vocal about the message this sends given the IPL's enormous following among young fans in India. Cricket captains carry a level of responsibility that extends beyond the playing field, and the sight of a team captain using a banned device on national television is difficult to defend regardless of the context.
What This Means for Parag and RR Going Forward
On the field, RR are in a strong position heading into the rest of IPL 2026. They sit third on the points table with 12 points and six wins from nine matches, and Parag has contributed meaningfully in moments when his team needed him most. But the captain's off-field conduct will continue to attract attention in the coming days, and any additional disciplinary proceedings could affect his availability or focus at a critical stage of the season.
The Royals will be keen to draw a line under this episode and refocus on the cricket ahead. Tonight's match against Delhi Capitals is exactly the kind of high-stakes game where they cannot afford distractions.
