Santner and Latham to Share Captaincy in New Zealand’s T20I Series Against South Africa
New Zealand have announced a unique leadership arrangement for their upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa, with Mitchell Santner set to captain the first three matches before handing over duties to Tom Latham for the final two games. The series, which begins on March 15 in Mount Maunganui, will give several players an opportunity to rest while allowing new faces to make their mark in the Black Caps setup.

The decision to split captaincy responsibilities is part of New Zealand Cricket’s plan to manage the workload of players who recently participated in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Santner, who led the side during the tournament, will guide the team in the opening matches before stepping aside for Latham, New Zealand’s Test captain, who is set to make his first T20I appearance in nearly three years.

Selector Gavin Larsen explained that the squad selection reflects a pragmatic approach as the team begins a new T20 World Cup cycle. Several key players have been rested to keep them fresh for upcoming tours, including a visit to Bangladesh in April and May followed by winter tours of England and the West Indies. Larsen highlighted that New Zealand’s strong squad depth allows them to rotate players while still remaining competitive.

Two players have earned their maiden T20I call-ups for the series. Northern Brave opening batter Katene Clarke has been rewarded for his outstanding performance in the Super Smash domestic competition, where he scored 431 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of over 170. His explosive batting played a crucial role in Northern Brave’s title run, and selectors believe he has the potential to succeed at international level.

Jayden Lennox is another newcomer to the T20I squad. The 31-year-old left-arm spinner impressed earlier this year during New Zealand’s ODI series in India, where his inward angle troubled right-handed batters. Lennox will join the squad for the final two matches of the series and is expected to play a key role as the frontline spinner once Santner departs the team.

Devon Conway is likely to keep wicket in the first three games, while Dane Cleaver will take over behind the stumps for the final two matches. Cleaver recently returned to action in the Plunket Shield after recovering from back spasms and scored an impressive century for Central Districts in Napier.

The squad also features several all-round options including Jimmy Neesham, Josh Clarkson and Cole McConchie, along with experienced spinner Ish Sodhi. Fast bowlers Kyle Jamieson and Ben Sears could also feature during the series, while Nathan Smith returns to the squad after recovering from injury and may make his T20I debut.

Injuries have ruled out several players including Michael Bracewell, who is still recovering from a calf injury that kept him out of the T20 World Cup, as well as Adam Milne, Blair Tickner and Will O’Rourke. Despite these absences, New Zealand believe the squad has enough depth to challenge a strong South African side.

The series will be played as double-header matchdays alongside the New Zealand women’s matches against South Africa, giving fans the chance to watch both teams in action. With several new players eager to prove themselves and experienced leaders guiding the squad, the Black Caps will be looking to start their new T20 cycle on a strong note.
