Sarfaraz Ahmed Retires from International Cricket After Illustrious Pakistan Career
Former Pakistan national cricket team captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a career that spanned more than 15 years. Sarfaraz represented Pakistan between 2007 and 2023, playing 54 Tests, 117 ODIs and 61 T20Is across formats.

One of the defining achievements of his career was leading Pakistan to victory in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. That triumph made Sarfaraz the first Pakistan captain since Imran Khan to lift a major 50-over ICC trophy, marking a historic moment for the national team. Pakistan famously defeated the India national cricket team in the final to secure the title after entering the tournament as the lowest-ranked team.

In a statement released by the Pakistan Cricket Board, Sarfaraz described representing Pakistan as the greatest honour of his life. He reflected on his journey from leading Pakistan to the 2006 ICC Under‑19 Cricket World Cup title to captaining the senior national side to Champions Trophy glory.

Sarfaraz captained Pakistan in 100 international matches across formats, including 13 Tests, 50 ODIs and 37 T20Is. During his tenure, Pakistan also rose to the No.1 position in the ICC Men's T20I Team Rankings, highlighting the team’s dominance in the shortest format under his leadership.

As a player, Sarfaraz compiled impressive numbers. He scored 3031 runs in Tests with four centuries, 2315 runs in ODIs with two centuries, and 818 runs in T20Is. Behind the stumps, the wicketkeeper recorded 315 catches and 56 stumpings across formats, demonstrating his reliability as a gloveman.

Sarfaraz is widely remembered for transforming Pakistan’s T20I side after taking over captaincy in 2016. Under his leadership, Pakistan won 29 of 37 T20Is, giving him the highest win percentage among Pakistan captains in the format. The team also achieved a world record by winning 11 consecutive T20I series during that period.

At the franchise level, Sarfaraz was closely associated with Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League. He captained the team for eight seasons and guided them to their only PSL title in 2019.

Despite his success as captain, a dip in personal form led to Sarfaraz being removed from leadership roles in 2019 and temporarily dropped from the national side. However, he produced memorable performances later in his career, including a remarkable series against the New Zealand national cricket team in Karachi in 2022 where he scored 86, 53, 78 and 118 across four innings.

Sarfaraz eventually played his final international match against the Australia national cricket team in Perth in December 2023. Following his retirement, he continues to remain involved in Pakistan cricket and has recently been appointed to the national men’s selection panel.

With his leadership achievements, memorable performances and contributions behind the stumps, Sarfaraz Ahmed leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of Pakistan’s most influential captains in modern cricket.
