Shubman Gill Is Carrying Gujarat Titans on His Back
There are team players and then there are players who make teams. In IPL 2026, Shubman Gill falls firmly into the second category. As a captain, a batter, and the emotional anchor of Gujarat Titans' season, he has been the constant through everything this team has done right over the past six weeks.
The Ankle Innings That Said Everything
In their most recent game against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur, Gill twisted his ankle during his innings and still finished with 84 off 44 deliveries. Nine fours and three sixes on a surface where most batters were finding timing difficult. He came off the field in some discomfort, confirmed the injury after the game, and then went on to talk about wanting his team to be even better in their next match.
That is the kind of captain you want. Not someone who plays through pain to be seen playing through pain, but someone so locked in on winning that stopping does not even appear as an option in their mind.
What His Numbers Look Like This Season
Gill has 462 runs from 11 matches in IPL 2026 and sits fourth on the Orange Cap standings behind Klaasen, Abhishek Sharma and KL Rahul. His strike rate across the season is well above 150, and he has contributed a fifty in four different matches including that 84 against RR.
What the numbers do not fully capture is how many of those innings came at moments when GT genuinely needed them. He has this habit of playing his best cricket when the game is on the line, which is the quality that separates good batters from match-winners.
The Captain Who Changed GT's Culture
When Hardik Pandya left for Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2024 season, there was understandable concern about what Gujarat would look like without the captain who had led them to two consecutive finals. What has emerged instead is something arguably more interesting. Gill's leadership style is quieter, more considered, and rooted in a deep understanding of conditions and match situations that you would expect from someone with his international experience.
He is now India's full-time Test and ODI captain, a man who scored 269 against England in Birmingham, the highest score by any Indian captain in Test cricket. That kind of expanded responsibility has only seemed to sharpen his focus in franchise cricket rather than dilute it.
GT's Four-Win Run
Under Gill's captaincy, Gujarat have won four consecutive matches heading into tonight's game against SRH, and the manner of those wins has been impressive. They have restricted strong batting lineups at Ahmedabad, chased efficiently when asked to, and bowled together as a unit with Rashid Khan and the pace combination of Siraj and Rabada operating in excellent form.
B Sai Sudharsan alongside Gill at the top has given GT a powerful opening partnership, and Jos Buttler adds serious middle-order experience. But all roads in this Gujarat Titans batting order lead back to the captain.
For the next few weeks until IPL 2026 is decided, watching what Shubman Gill does on the big nights is going to be one of the more rewarding things about following this tournament.
