Shubman Gill Sets Sights on 2027 ODI World Cup as India’s Ultimate Goal
16 Mar 2026, 10:41 am

Shubman Gill has revealed that winning the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2027 is the “ultimate goal” for the India national cricket team, especially after the disappointment of narrowly missing the trophy in 2023. Speaking during the Board of Control for Cricket in India awards on Star Sports, Gill reflected on how close India came to lifting the title on home soil.
India dominated the 2023 Cricket World Cup with an unbeaten run throughout the tournament before losing the final to the Australia national cricket team in Ahmedabad. Gill said the team still remembers how close they were and is motivated to make the most of their next opportunity at the global event.
According to Gill, winning any World Cup for India is the highest achievement for a cricketer, and the 2027 tournament presents another chance to accomplish that dream. He said the possibility of getting another shot at the trophy in southern Africa is something that occasionally crosses his mind while planning for the future.
The 2027 Cricket World Cup will feature 14 teams and will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia during October and November. It will be the first time the tournament returns to the region since 2003, providing a new challenge for participating teams.
Meanwhile, India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav admitted he would love the chance to replay the 2023 World Cup final. When asked which match he would most like to revisit, he pointed directly to that game, saying he would want another opportunity to change the result.
Yadav also highlighted how India’s victory in the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup served as a turning point for Indian cricket. He described the title as the “spark” that inspired success across various Indian teams in recent years.
Following that triumph, India continued to enjoy success on the global stage. The men’s team won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, while the India women's national cricket team captured the Women's Cricket World Cup in the same year. India’s men’s side then added another ICC title in 2026, reinforcing the nation’s dominance in international cricket.
According to Yadav, experiencing the feeling of winning a major ICC event helped players understand what it takes to succeed at the highest level. He believes that once a team tastes that success, it builds the confidence needed to continue winning more trophies.
With Gill targeting the 2027 ODI World Cup and India riding the momentum of recent international titles, the team will aim to turn their ambition into another historic triumph on the global stage.
