11 Jan 2026, 7:57 pm

As Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer gear up for the first ODI against New Zealand in Vadodara on Sunday, both batters will have an opportunity to achieve significant personal milestones in the ODI format. Vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is just 83 runs away from completing 3,000 runs in ODIs. With 67 innings under his belt, Iyer is set to become the fastest Indian to reach this milestone, surpassing Shikhar Dhawan, who took 72 innings. If Iyer achieves the feat in the opening ODI, he would also become the joint third-fastest batter overall to reach 3,000 runs, equalling Pakistan's Babar Azam. South African legend Hashim Amla holds the record for the fastest, reaching 3,000 runs in just 57 innings.
On the other hand, captain Shubman Gill is also closing in on the 3,000-run mark in ODIs. Gill needs just 182 runs to reach the landmark and has played 58 innings so far. If he completes the milestone during the series against New Zealand, he will become the fastest Indian to achieve 3,000 ODI runs in terms of both innings and matches. Globally, Gill will be the second-fastest batter to reach the 3,000-run mark, behind only Hashim Amla.
In another major milestone, Virat Kohli is just 25 runs away from becoming the third player in history to score 28,000 international runs, joining the ranks of Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara. Kohli also needs just 42 more runs to surpass Sangakkara's 28,016 runs, making him the second-highest run-scorer of all time across all formats.
India's first ODI against New Zealand will be held in Vadodara on Sunday, January 11.
