Tim David Banned for IPL 2027 Opener After Ice Bag Incident in IPL Final

A Moment of Frustration That Cost Tim David Dearly

Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter Tim David has been handed a one-match suspension for throwing an ice bag aggressively in the direction of umpire Nitin Menon during the IPL 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The incident occurred during the tenth over of Gujarat Titans' innings after a wicket decision left David clearly frustrated. He was also fined 50 percent of his match fee on top of the playing ban.

What the IPL Code of Conduct Says

The IPL confirmed that David was found guilty of breaching Article 2.9 of the Code of Conduct, which covers throwing any item of cricket equipment at or near a player, umpire, or match official in a dangerous or inappropriate manner. Match referee Javagal Srinath imposed the penalty after David admitted the offence and accepted the sanction without challenge, which at least showed some accountability on his part.

Five Demerit Points Trigger the Suspension

This was David's third Level 1 breach of the IPL 2026 season. He had already collected three demerit points from two earlier incidents during the tournament. The two new points handed down for the final incident took his rolling 36-month tally to five, which is the threshold that triggers an automatic one-match playing ban. He will miss RCB's first game of IPL 2027, regardless of which franchise he represents by then.

RCB Win the Title But David's Ban Overshadows the Celebrations

RCB still went on to beat Gujarat Titans in the final and successfully defend their IPL title, becoming only the third franchise in IPL history to retain the trophy. Captain Rajat Patidar made history by becoming the first skipper to win the IPL in each of his first two seasons as captain. David contributed 24 runs off 17 balls in the match. But the manner in which he conducted himself in a moment of heat will sit as a regret in what should have been a night of pure celebration for the Bengaluru outfit.
