UP Warriorz Reflect on WPL Season: Small Breakdowns Cost Big in 2026 Campaign
UP Warriorz’s WPL season offered hard truths and valuable lessons, as head coach Abhishek Nayar reflected on a campaign shaped not by one decisive failure but by a chain of small breakdowns. The title mirrors the reality of their journey: despite promise, planning, and talent, consistency slipped away, leaving UP Warriorz rooted to the bottom of the table for the second consecutive year in the Women’s Premier League.

The UP Warriorz WPL 2026 season ended with just two wins, surrounded by a string of losses that defined their league standing. Nayar explained that the campaign lacked a single moment where everything went wrong. Instead, multiple minor issues gradually compounded, disrupting momentum and rhythm. Early signs after the mega auction were encouraging, but sustained performance never materialized.

A major turning point came with the departure of Phoebe Litchfield due to a quad injury. The Australian batter had been the side’s leading run-scorer with 243 runs in six innings. Losing her in the business end disrupted the top order, and replacement options failed to restore stability.

Top-order struggles continued, with Kiran Navgire underperforming and other combinations failing to click. Deepti Sharma was promoted to open in the final matches, producing 55 and 29, but Nayar stressed this was a tactical decision, not a long-term solution.

Despite the disappointing results, positives emerged. Meg Lanning’s leadership stood out, and players like Litchfield and Shikha Pandey were identified as key long-term assets. Nayar believes the lessons from this season will strengthen the team’s foundation, paving the way for a more consistent future in the WPL
