Venkatesh Iyer Finally Gets His Chance at RCB and Grabs It With Both Hands

A Player Pushed to the Fringes

Venkatesh Iyer had played only four games for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026 before Sunday's match against Punjab Kings in Dharamshala. In three of those four appearances, he barely got to bat. A 29 off 15 against Rajasthan Royals and a 12 off 15 against Gujarat Titans were the only two innings he had managed. For a player of his ability and reputation, the frustration of sitting on the bench week after week, watching others play, was real. He admitted as much after the match, saying he would be lying if he claimed he was not frustrated.

The Door Opens, Iyer Walks Through It

Captain Rajat Patidar was unavailable for the PBKS clash after taking a blow to the helmet in RCB's previous game. The absence created a gap in the batting order, and Venkatesh Iyer was handed the No. 4 spot, the highest he had batted all season. He came in at a moment when RCB needed someone to accelerate and took everything the PBKS bowlers threw at him. He scooped Omarzai twice in consecutive balls, then took on Lockie Ferguson for 6, 4, 0, 6 in one over to race to his fifty off just 29 balls. He eventually finished with an unbeaten 73 off 40 balls, hitting 8 fours and 4 sixes. Tim David joined the carnage at the end with 28 off 12, and RCB posted a commanding 222 for 4.

What His Innings Did for RCB

Without Iyer's innings, RCB might have ended up around 190, which is a chaseable total on that pitch. His acceleration in the back 10 overs took the match away from PBKS before the second innings even started. The 222 proved too steep for a PBKS side already rattled by early wickets from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and RCB won by 23 runs to seal their playoff spot. It was not just a Player of the Match performance. It was the knock that confirmed RCB as IPL 2026's first qualifier.

The Bigger Picture for Venkatesh Iyer

Iyer joined RCB at the 2026 mini-auction for 7 crore after a difficult 2025 season with KKR, where he managed just 142 runs in 11 matches. His reputation as one of the most destructive left-handed batters in Indian cricket had taken a knock. Sunday's innings was a reminder of exactly what he is capable of when given the opportunity and the freedom to play his natural game. His career IPL numbers now include 1,509 runs at a strike rate above 137, and that basement innings at Dharamshala raised them in exactly the right company.

What Comes Next for the RCB Allrounder

RCB's final league match is against SRH in Hyderabad on May 22. Patidar may or may not recover in time, which means Iyer could find himself back in the No. 4 spot again. If he keeps batting like this, the conversation will shift from whether he deserves a place in the team to whether the team can afford to drop him. For now, Venkatesh Iyer is exactly where he wanted to be, playing cricket, making it count, and sending RCB deeper into the tournament.
