Who Is Krish Bhagat? MI's Surprise IPL Debutant
21 Apr 2026, 12:10 pm

From Jalandhar to the Narendra Modi Stadium
Not many cricketers make their IPL debut three days after joining the squad. Krish Bhagat did exactly that on April 20, walking out at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to represent Mumbai Indians against Gujarat Titans in one of the most high-pressure fixtures of the IPL 2026 season.
The 21-year-old was not even on the original squad list. He was brought in as a replacement for all-rounder Atharva Ankolekar, who was ruled out for the season with a serious injury. Mumbai Indians, who had been struggling with their bowling all season, moved quickly to bring in a pace-bowling option that could add balance to the lower order.
The Background That Made Him Ready
Bhagat was born on November 6, 2004, in Jalandhar, Punjab. He is the nephew of Jalandhar West MLA Mohinder Bhagat, making him the first member of his family to pursue professional cricket. His mother encouraged him to pick up the bat at age six, and he progressed through local academies before earning recognition at the state level.
His path to Mumbai Indians was built on two years of persistence. He served as a support bowler during MI's pre-season camps and represented the Reliance team in the 2026 DY Patil T20 Cup, where he impressed the coaching staff with his ability to generate pace consistently. A previous serious spinal injury made his journey even more remarkable.
What He Brings to Mumbai Indians
Bhagat is primarily a right-arm pace bowler with the added value of lower-order batting. In his seven First Class matches for Punjab, he has demonstrated the skill to hit hard lengths and trouble batters with his movement. In the GT match, his athleticism behind the stumps produced the sharp catch at cover that completed Jasprit Bumrah's first wicket of IPL 2026, triggering a collapse that ended Gujarat Titans' innings at just 100.
Mumbai Indians released a statement at the time of his signing that specifically highlighted his dedication and the quality he brings to training sessions, signalling that this was a considered call rather than a panic move.
A Franchise Known for Finding Stars Early
MI have a long record of giving young talent a platform at the right moment. Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma himself all emerged through similar pathways of patient development followed by a moment of sudden opportunity. Whether Bhagat follows that same arc will depend on consistency, but his debut showed that he belongs at this level.
