Will O’Rourke Nears Return From Back Injury as New Zealand Manage Pace Resources Carefully

Will O'Rourke is close to making his long-awaited return to competitive cricket after recovering from a back injury that has sidelined him for several months. The young fast bowler, considered one of the most promising pace prospects in the New Zealand national cricket team setup, could return to action as early as next month, according to national selector Gavin Larsen.
O’Rourke, 24, suffered the injury during the first Test against Zimbabwe national cricket team in Bulawayo in July last year. Since then, New Zealand Cricket has taken a cautious approach with his rehabilitation programme, ensuring the tall fast bowler returns fully fit rather than rushing him back into international competition.
Larsen explained that the team management has deliberately taken a patient approach with O’Rourke’s recovery, acknowledging both the player’s eagerness to return and his importance to the national team’s long-term plans. According to Larsen, O’Rourke has been eager to get back on the field but understands the need for careful management to avoid further setbacks.
The fast bowler could potentially return either with the New Zealand A side during their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka or with the senior team during their tour of Bangladesh. Both tours are expected to overlap with major T20 franchise competitions such as the Indian Premier League and the Pakistan Super League, meaning New Zealand may use the opportunity to rotate players and manage workloads effectively.
New Zealand are especially focused on ensuring O’Rourke is fully fit for a busy upcoming Test schedule. The Black Caps are set to play a significant stretch of red-ball cricket later in the year, including a home series against India national cricket team followed by major overseas tours to England and Australia. In total, the team could face around ten Test matches in quick succession, making the availability of their key fast bowlers critical.
O’Rourke is regarded as a unique asset for New Zealand due to his height and high release point, which allow him to generate steep bounce and trouble batters on a variety of surfaces. Team management believes that keeping him healthy for the upcoming Test calendar could provide the side with an important tactical advantage.
New Zealand’s pace resources have also been affected by injuries to several other bowlers. Fast bowlers Adam Milne and Blair Tickner are currently dealing with injuries, further highlighting the need for careful workload management within the fast-bowling group. Despite these setbacks, the team recently reached the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup and also achieved a historic milestone by winning their first-ever bilateral ODI series in India earlier this year.
Larsen emphasized that modern cricket schedules have become increasingly demanding, with international commitments, global tournaments and franchise leagues all competing for players’ time. As a result, national teams must balance performance with player welfare, particularly when it comes to fast bowlers who are more prone to injuries due to heavy workloads.
Meanwhile, all-rounder Cole McConchie has also received praise from the selectors after his impactful performances during the recent T20 World Cup campaign. Initially considered a surprise selection after Michael Bracewell was ruled out with injury, McConchie played a valuable role with both bat and ball during the tournament.
The 34-year-old delivered key contributions, including an important batting partnership with captain Mitchell Santner in the opening match and a decisive spell in the semi-final where he claimed two wickets in a single over against left-handed batters. According to Larsen, McConchie’s performances highlighted the depth within New Zealand’s cricket system, as players waiting for their opportunity can step up and deliver when called upon.
As New Zealand prepares for a demanding year of international cricket, the return of O’Rourke could provide a significant boost to their fast-bowling arsenal and strengthen the team’s prospects across formats.
